Massachusetts Lawyers Journal Article on Plight of Captive Elephants - Karen Rabinovici

Wednesday, April 30, 2014

An article by Pierce and Mandell associate Karen Rabinovici recently appeared in the April 2014 edition of Massachusetts Lawyers Journal, a publication of the Massachusetts Bar Association.

Karen’s piece details the plight of captive elephants used for entertainment, the abuse and terror they endure, and proposed Senate Bill 1626, which if enacted would prohibit the use of bullhooks in Massachusetts on captive elephants.

The article can be found by clicking here, and scrolling to page 16:

Karen provides the following update to the article:

Sadly, on March 13 the Senate Committee voted to send the bill to “study,” effectively killing it.  Hopefully the HBO documentary “An Apology to Elephants” will join the ranks of other renowned films such as “The Cove” and “Blackfish,” which helped change popular opinion regarding the shameful treatment of animals.  This could help pave the way for the bill in the future.

Friday, November 08, 2013

Pierce & Mandell, P.C. is proud to announce that partners Bob Pierce, Bill Mandell, Michael Fee, Tom Kenney and Bob Kirby, have been selected for inclusion in the 2013 Massachusetts Super Lawyers.  Partner Dennis Lindgren and Associate Curtis Dooling have been designated 2013 Massachusetts Rising Stars.

Bob Pierce was recognized as a Super Lawyer in the practice of Civil Litigation Defense; Bill Mandell in Health Care; and Michael Fee, Bob Kirby and Tom Kenney in Business Litigation.  Dennis Lindgren was recognized as a Rising Star in the practice of Personal Injury Plaintiff and Curtis Dooling in Land Use/Zoning.

Super Lawyers is a rating service of outstanding lawyers from more than 70 practice areas who have attained a high-degree of peer recognition and professional achievement. The selection process is multi-phased and includes independent research, peer nominations, and peer evaluations.  Rising Stars are those attorneys under the age of 40 who have been nominated by peers for excellence in their chosen practice area.  Candidates are then evaluated utilizing twelve indicators of peer recognition and professional achievement.  No more than 3 percent of eligible lawyers in Massachusetts are named to the Rising Star list each year.

The Super Lawyers supplement will be published in the November, 2013 issue of Boston Magazine and is widely distributed in regional publications and across the country.

Pierce & Mandell Logo Golf Ball Causes a Hole-in-One!

Tuesday, October 01, 2013

The “Contact Us” button on our website enables visitors to quickly access our contact information, office locations and driving directions.  It also allows existing and potential clients to email questions about our firm, potential cases, or transactions.  Occasionally, we get great feedback or funny stories, like the following:

“I want to thank whoever lost one of your Logo Golf balls at North Hill CC, in Duxbury this past summer. While looking for my own ball, as a result of my errant shot, at the 4th hole I found one of yours. I used it and on the 8th hole I scored my first hole-in-one using your ball. Thanks Again!”

This is not the first time that a P&M logo ball has found the bottom of the cup for a hole-in-one.  Our Duxbury friend deserves hearty congratulations for the ace, and reminds us of the extraordinary exploits of our founding partner, Robert Pierce, who made two holes-in-one during a single round at Wollaston Country Club in 2006.  Difficult to believe, but the scorecard does not lie.

While skill and/or luck may have played some role in the events described, we would like to think that the “logo mojo” associated with our Pierce & Mandell golf ball was a prime contributor.  In honor of this most recent stroke of excellence, we will contribute $1,000.00 to the Eddie Mandell Scholarship Fund, a charity that awards funds to deserving Boston high school graduates to help pay for college.

Pierce & Mandell, P.C. to Sponsor the Annual Schwartz Center Health Attorneys Breakfast

Monday, April 08, 2013
By Bill Mandell

Pierce & Mandell, P.C. is proud to be a sponsor law firm for the Annual Schwartz Center Health Law Attorneys Breakfast, to be held on Thursday, April 11th.
The Schwartz Center for Compassionate Healthcare, named after Boston healthcare attorney and patient compassion advocate, Ken Schwartz. Ken was an excellent health lawyer and a wonderful person who left us tragically way too early. His family, friends and colleagues have established a fitting and enduring organization in his honor. The Schwartz Center is a nationwide non-profit organization with a long and respected history of providing patient-centered, compassionate care while striving to strengthen the relationships between patients and providers.

In 1995 Ken wrote about his experience as a cancer patient in an article for the Boston Globe Magazine entitled “A Patient’s Story.”  In it, he cited how doctors and nurses can make “the unbearable bearable” for patients with “the smallest acts of kindness.” This article was a source of strength and solidarity for my late father who was undergoing cancer treatment at that time.

Please take a moment to learn about the history and remarkable work of The Schwartz Center for Compassionate Care and we encourage all of you who care about improving the training and resources available for compassionate care to support the Schwartz Center.
